Not Investing In Quality Content Costs You Your Business

Why investing in content is important? Why is content important in marketing and why should you care so much about the quality of your content?

According to a survey done by SEMrush in 2021, 77% of organizations and businesses use content marketing in their overall marketing strategy. This number grew to 97% in 2021. That’s huge!

Why so many companies are investing in content and not just in content but in good quality content? Many companies even split their 50% budget for content and 50% for advertising.

Why spend so much on content when anyone can write it?

Let’s find out.

How content helps a business:

Let’s just get a general view of how content helps a business and why is it important. Note that I’m not talking about quality right now, I’m just talking about content.

So what’s the ultimate goal of a business? Of course to get sales and grow. To do so you want people.

People should know that you exist, and what you offer to buy from you.

So it all comes down to people and your audience. To grow your business you need people. And content gets you an audience, not ads and marketing, they’re just vehicles to reach your customers.

In the long run, it’s all about people. You’re selling to an audience. If you’ve them you flourish.

Why should you invest in quality content and how not doing so costs you your business?

Content is the backbone of any business in the digital world.

If your business is anyhow dependent on the digital world you’ll need content. Website, social media, newsletter, ads, and videos are nothing without content. This is what educates people, tell them about your business, tell them what you’re offering and make them finally buy.

According to content marketers, the 3 main things content and content marketing help a business achieve are brand awareness, audience trust, and educating customers.

Let’s break down this and see why content quality is important.

1. Educate, familiarize and convert:

If you spend a lot on marketing and ads and not on content, then read this.

Ads and marketing are vehicles and tactics to get in front of your audience. Once you’re facing them, marketing and ads have done their job. Now it’s all about content. Content will educate your audience, tell them about your product and make them buy it.

If your content is not good people will ignore it. They’ll never convert. All the budget that you spent on ads and marketing is wasted.

2. Maintains rankings:

Let’s say you hired a writer and got some articles written for your blog. Then you spent your time and energy building backlinks and doing technical SEO to come to Google’s first page.

Let’s assume your articles are ranking on the first page, but, they’re not exactly providing the reader with what they want. Your articles aren’t adding any value to the reader.

What will happen?

Google will der-rank those articles. You won’t be able to maintain that position because your content wasn’t good enough.

Google promotes pages that people are liking and spending time on because it’s the ultimate goal of Google to provide its audience with what they’re looking for.

3. Builds brands:

Before getting to the main point let me tell you in one line want branding is.

Branding is nothing but your audience’s view and image of you. How they perceive you is what makes your brand.

Now if you’re trying to create brand awareness and you’re not investing in content and putting quality work out there, you’ll de-brand your business.

People will start making an image of your business with what content you’re publishing. If it’s not good you’re de-branding yourself. You’re getting in negative margins.

This is worse than having no brand at all because to reverse this you’ll have to first get back to zero. So putting the right message across is crucial.

4. Establishes trust and certainty:

Do you know why people buy from a certain company or brand? Because they trust it. That company has a reputation. Its customers are familiar with the brand and they trust it.

Content marketing helps you exactly do that. It establishes trust and confidence between the business and its audience.

But again, to market the content you need good quality content which puts the right message in front of the audience.

5. Stay on top of the competition and mind:

Every business has some competitors, right? And we always want to stay on top of the competition. However, you’ll be nowhere if your competitor invests in content and you don’t.

That’s scary but true. Your competitor will be on people’s minds. Whenever they’ll think about your industry products your competitor will come to their mind.

Why?

Because they have educated and interacted with the audience the right way. People are familiar with that brand and business, and they trust it.

6. Brings more eyeballs:

I know I don’t have to back this up with any research or stat. It’s obvious and we observe it ourselves that digital consumers have an extremely short attention span. You only have a few seconds to gain your audience’s attention.

It’s really difficult to do that with just content, you’ll need quality content and a writer who understands your audience. Let’s say you get the attention somehow. But if your audience don’t like what you’re showing them they’ll ruthlessly scroll without wasting a second.

Content is the King:

In 1996 Bill Gates wrote an essay with the title “Content is King”.

He wrote: “Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the Internet, just as it was in broadcasting.

He also wrote: “Those who succeed will propel the Internet forward as a marketplace of ideas, experiences, and products – a marketplace of content.”

Bill Gates himself is telling you about the importance of content. Isn’t this worth considering?

And we’ve now seen what content can do for a business so we all know why content is the king.

To summarize it all:

What happens when you invest in quality content?

  • You put the right message in front of people.
  • Your ads convert.
  • Your branding game gets strong.
  • People start recognizing your business.
  • Ultimately your business grows.

So allocate a fair amount of budget for any content-dependent project that you’re about to start. It’s as important as marketing and sales. And if you’re pushing low-quality content, you’ve signed a losing deal.
